Soda in glasses

When it comes to staying hydrated, water is always the best option to keep your body and smile healthy. However, most of us aren’t solely drinking water. There are a wide range of other beverages out there that can be problematic for your oral health. Continue reading to learn about 4 beverages that you should avoid sipping on too often for the sake of your smile.

Coffee

For many, the morning isn’t complete without a hot cup of coffee. The problem is that coffee is an acidic beverage, and if you are sipping on it all morning, it can cause you to develop cavities – especially when it is consumed with additives, like sugary creamers and syrups. When you make your beverage choice in the morning, try skipping the sweet additions and/or using a straw to reduce your likelihood of developing cavities.

Soda

Soda contains lots of sugar and acid. This is a disastrous combination for your tooth enamel. If you’re choosing lots of sodas that contain caffeine, this can encourage dehydration, resulting in dry mouth. This makes your teeth even more cavity-prone. The same is true about sports drinks and energy drinks. It’s best to save these beverages for an occasional treat. Drinking water after your soda can help to rinse away some of the sugar and acid.

Alcohol

The sugar and acid that are present in alcoholic beverages can take a toll on your enamel. Alcohol also dries out your mouth, heightening the effects of the sugar and acid as you sip on your drink. It is best to save alcohol for special occasions. It’s also important that you are mindful of the type of alcohol that you choose. For instance, white wine is more acidic than red wine. So, if you are looking for a glass of wine, red is a better option for your smile.

Fruit Juice

Just like soda, fruit juice contains a lot of sugar and acid, so it isn’t a great option for your teeth. Remember only to consume it in moderation. Try drinking your juice through a straw and chasing it with water to wash away the sugar and acid.

When it comes to your oral health, the choices that you make every day have a big impact. Sipping on a variety of beverages can be problematic for your tooth enamel, increasing your risk of multiple dental issues. By only enjoying the above beverages in moderation and making good choices, you can set your smile up for success!
